Nearly 1 in 3 students are bullied in the US by the time they reach middle school.Thousands of students miss school every day because they are afraid to go. While bullying can happen for many reasons including a feeling of toughness, wanting to be popular or having a sense of control for those lacking that in other areas of their lives, we are seeing more and more that victims of bullying have a real or perceived difference from the bully, which the bully fears, distrusts, misunderstands or is jealous towards.

We are seeing an increase in protests over racial injustices in our country. The consequences of what happens when we do not treat each other equally and fairly is front and center for our students right now. There is no better time than now to make sure all students understand why we need to treat everyone with respect, learn about, understand and celebrate our differences and learn how to look out for those that may need our help.

This PD workshop will include ideas and research behind the importance of peer connections and how to help facilitate them. Statistics around how bullying prevention must be a multifaceted approach, tied into the fabric of the school’s goals, culture and language will be shared. Moreover, participants will understand how teaching acceptance through team building and SEL can create an environment where bullying is not accepted and everyone is treated with equality and fairness, which rolls over into their lives outside of school.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Learn to teach students to recognize a peer in need and understand why they should reach out.
  • Understand how to build a TEAM culture in their classroom and/or school to cultivate a sense of connectedness and togetherness amongst all students.
  • Learn how to help students understand their role as the bystander
  • Leave with strategies they can use and activities and lessons to teach and reinforce acceptance and anti-bullying.
