“School climate” can be defined as the quality and character of school life based on the collective perceptions of students, staff and families (NSCC.org). A positive school climate is attained through the school’s culture, practices and language. Everyone needs to be on the same page, sending the same messages and using the same language to let all students know they are part of one team working together to achieve common goals. There are many benefits to a positive school climate including higher graduation rates, increased academic achievement, improved staff morale and decreases in risky behaviors and discipline referrals. Educators today are becoming familiar with the research base that supports a positive school climate and yet transforming that climate can seem complex and overwhelming.
